Most Frequently asked questions

CAN I KEEP MY BONSAI INDOORS?

No, houses were built for people, not trees.  The trees’ leaves need    to be ‘kissed’ by the sun in order to survive.  You can however, very occasionally, bring your bonsai inside for a day or two in order to enjoy its beauty but it must live outside.

HOW OFTEN DO I HAVE TO WATER IT?

Just how much water your tree needs depends on a number of things i.e. the season, its position, size, species of tree etc.  The best method is to use your finger and feel the soil.  If is still moist on the top then it is still wet enough at the roots.  If it is dry to the touch then I would give it a good watering.

DO I HAVE TO RE-POT MY TREE?

Yes, re-potting is done to keep the tree healthy.  Re-potting must be carried out at the appropriate season for your species of tree.  Young trees should be done every 1 to 2 years.  Older trees only need re-potting at 3 to 5 year intervals.

I’M NOT SURE HOW TO DO THIS, CAN YOU HELP ME?

Yes, we can do the work for you or better still, you can bring your tree and attend one of our workshops and we will help you.  You can also attend a Beginner’s Course and learn the ‘Art of Bonsai’.  Contact us for information.

GENERAL  INFORMATION

The kind of trees that are most suitable for Bonsai must, first of all be able to survive in your climate and location.  Trees that naturally have a long lifespan and also have the ability to grow back on the old wood are excellent material.  When styling a Bonsai we have to sometimes cut back to old wood.   Small flowers and fruit are desirable to give the tree balance.  Small leaves or leaves that will respond to leaf reduction methods help to give the tree better proportions.
